How to choose the right guitar strings

Electric or acoustic strings

Electric and acoustic guitars need different strings. Electric strings are usually made from nickel-plated steel or similar alloys and work with the magnetic pickups in your guitar. Acoustic steel-string sets are commonly made from bronze alloys such as 80/20 bronze or phosphor bronze, which give a bright, projecting tone. Classical guitars use nylon strings and should never be fitted with steel strings.

String gauge

Gauge is the thickness of the strings, measured in thousandths of an inch. Lighter gauges are generally easier to bend and press down. Heavier gauges usually give more volume, sustain and a fuller tone, but need more finger strength. Check the gauge listed on each product before you order.

Coated and uncoated strings

Coated strings have a thin layer that protects them from sweat and dirt, so they tend to stay fresh longer. Uncoated strings are often preferred for their natural feel and are usually the more traditional choice.

What to check before you buy

  • Guitar type: electric, acoustic steel-string or classical.
  • Gauge: match it to your playing style and the setup of your guitar.
  • Number of strings: most guitars use six, but some use seven or more.
  • Material and coating: this affects tone, feel and how long the strings last.
  • Need advice on strings?Changing to a different gauge can affect string tension and may call for a setup adjustment. Our repair workshop is open six days a week, and you are welcome to visit the showroom in Hilversum or get in touch with your questions. If you are just starting out, our guitar school can also help you get the most from your instrument.

FAQHow often should I change my guitar strings? It depends on how often you play and on your own playing style. As a general rule, change them when they sound dull, feel rough or no longer hold their tuning.

  • Can I use electric strings on an acoustic guitar? It is not recommended. Electric strings are designed for pickups and sound thin on an acoustic guitar. Choose a set made for your type of instrument.
