Combo amps, heads and cabinets

Guitar amplifiers generally come in two formats. Knowing the difference makes it easier to filter the list.

• Combo amps have the amplifier and the speaker in a single cabinet. They are simple to set up and a popular choice for home, studio and stage.
• Heads and cabinets are sold as separate units. You pair an amp head with a speaker cabinet, which gives you more freedom to shape your sound and build a rig that suits you.

How to choose the right ampA few questions help narrow down your options:

• Where will you play? Practising at home asks for something different than rehearsing with a drummer or playing on stage.
• Which sound do you want? Clean, crunch and high gain tones all depend on the amp design, the speaker and your guitar.
• What guitar will you plug in? The best results come from pairing amp and guitar. If you play one of the instruments in our guitar collection, bring that in mind when you compare amps.
• How much power do you need? Higher wattage generally means more clean headroom and volume. Lower wattage amps reach their natural overdrive at lower volumes.
