Lunchbox Hero – Now with Lead Channel Overdrive Control

“We knew we wanted a low-wattage amp. The challenge was getting a lot of tone and features in a little box. We’re all blown away with how it turned out. It’s going to be great for someone to take it out of the box, set everything to noon, and have it sound great.”
– Mark Tremonti

The MT 15 is a commanding two channel amp with balanced aggression and articulation. The MT 15 punches above its weight class with a large, bold sound, so you can dig in heavy with rhythms but also get singing lead tones out of one amp. Whether recording, practicing, writing, or playing a small room, this amp has everything you need.

The MT 15’s design started with heavier players in mind, but in the end, it has a lot to offer players of all genres. Like the PRS Archon amplifier, the MT 15 features five gain stages before the Master for full, lush distortion. The lead channel gets big, chunky tone with massive, tight low end, but it never loses its articulate note definition or great lead tone. The Lead channel also features a push/pull overdrive control that removes two gain stages to produce vintage, crunchier “mid gain” tones. The clean channel is bright and chimey, good with chords and fingerstyle playing – whether with a pick or not. The clean channel also features a push/pull boost control that adds a little overdrive for old school crunch. No matter what tone you dial in, the MT 15 stays balanced across the spectrum with a sweet, smooth tone that won’t bite your head off.

Additional features include an effects loop and bias adjusters that are accessible from the back panel for ease of servicing. Despite its 15 watts, the MT 15 sounds more like 50, so a half power switch that takes the MT to 7 watts is a welcome addition. Bottom line, the amount of features, the hugeness of the sound, and the raw horsepower of the circuit make the MT 15 an impressive lunchbox hero.

The MT 15 is Mark Tremonti’s first signature amplifier.

Description

PRS Tremonti MT15 V2 Head: 15W two-channel tube amp

The PRS Tremonti MT15 V2 head (often searched as the MT 15 or MT15 amp) is a two-channel, 15 watt tube amp head with a Lead and a Clean channel. It is Mark Tremonti’s first signature amplifier and is built to deliver a big, bold sound from a compact black metal chassis.

Whether you are recording, practising, writing or playing a small room, the MT15 is designed to give you everything you need in one small box. PRS calls it a lunchbox hero.

MT15 amp sound: Lead and Clean channels

Lead channel

The Lead channel gives you big, chunky tone with a massive, tight low end, while keeping its note definition and lead tone. Like the PRS Archon amplifier, the MT15 has five gain stages before the Master for full, lush distortion.

The Lead channel also has a push/pull overdrive control on the Treble knob. It removes two gain stages to give you vintage, crunchier mid-gain tones.

Clean channel

The Clean channel is bright and chimey, and works well with chords and fingerstyle playing, with or without a pick. A push/pull boost control on the Treble knob adds a little overdrive for old school crunch.

Whichever channel you use, the MT15 is designed to stay balanced across the spectrum with a smooth, sweet tone. The 1-button footswitch included with the amp switches between the Gain and Clean channels.

15 watts or 7 watts: switchable power

The MT15 is switchable between 15 and 7 watts. PRS describes the amp as sounding more like a 50 watt amp despite its 15 watts, and the half power switch that takes it to 7 watts is a welcome addition for lower volumes.

Tubes in the PRS MT15 V2 head

The amp uses two TAD 6L6GCM-STR power tubes and six 12AX7 / ECC83 preamp tubes. Each preamp tube position has a set job:

  • V1: Input
  • V2: Clean
  • V3 and V4: Lead
  • V5: Loop
  • V6: Phase Inverter

Back panel: effects loop, speaker outputs and bias

  • Series, tube driven effects loop
  • Three extension speaker jacks: two 8 ohm parallel and one 16 ohm
  • Adjustable bias with monitoring jacks
  • Fused power inlet (IEC)

The effects loop and the bias adjusters are on the back panel, which makes servicing easier.
