PRS SE Special Semi-Hollow Charcoal Burst: what you get

This SE Series model brings the PRS Narrowfield DD pickup design and an intuitive coil-tap system to a classic maple top guitar. The semi-hollow construction enhances sustain and resonance, and the f-hole adds a classic look. The Charcoal Burst model combines a figured maple veneer with a mahogany back and a shallow violin top carve.

Sound and pickups

The guitar has a hum/single/hum pickup layout. Two 58/15 LT “S” pickups sit in the treble and bass positions, with a Narrowfield DD “S” in the middle. A 5-way blade pickup switch, volume and tone controls and two mini-toggle coil tap switches let you move from warm, full humbucker sounds to crisp single-coil chime.

• Treble pickup: 58/15 LT “S”
• Middle pickup: Narrowfield DD “S”
• Bass pickup: 58/15 LT “S”
• Controls: volume, tone, 5-way blade switch and two coil tap mini-toggles

This range of tones makes the guitar a good fit for styles from jazz and blues to rock and beyond.

Playability and neck

The multi-ply maple neck has a wide thin shape, a rosewood fretboard with bird inlays, 22 frets and a 25″ scale length. The neck is set into the body. Hardware includes the PRS patented tremolo, PRS designed tuners and nickel finish. If you are comparing semi-hollow guitars, try the neck profile in person: the showroom in Hilversum is the best place to do that.
