Lunchbox Hero

“We knew we wanted a low-wattage amp. The challenge was getting a lot of tone and features in a little box. We’re all blown away with how it turned out. It’s going to be great for someone to take it out of the box, set everything to noon, and have it sound great.” – Mark Tremonti

The MT 15 is a commanding two channel amp with balanced aggression and articulation. Now upgraded with JJs 5881 power tubes, the MT 15 punches above its weight class with a large, bold sound, so you can dig in heavy with rhythms but also get singing lead tones out of one amp. Whether recording, practicing, writing, or playing a small room, this amp has everything you need.

The MT 15’s design started with heavier players in mind, but in the end, it has a lot to offer players of all genres. Like the PRS Archon amplifier, the MT 15 features five gain stages before the Master for full, lush distortion. The gain channel gets big, chunky tone with massive, tight low end, but it never loses its articulate note definition or great lead tone. The clean channel is bright and chimey, good with chords and fingerstyle playing – whether with a pic or not. The clean channel also features a push/pull boost control that adds a little overdrive for old school crunch. No matter what tone you dial in, the MT 15 stays balanced across the spectrum with a sweet, smooth tone that won’t bite your head off.

Additional features include an effects loop and bias adjusters that are accessible from the back panel for ease of servicing. Despite its 15 watts, the MT 15 sounds more like 50, so a half power switch that takes the MT to 7 watts is a welcome addition. Bottom line, the amount of features, the hugeness of the sound, and the raw horsepower of the circuit make the MT 15 an impressive lunchbox hero.

The MT 15 is Mark Tremonti’s first signature amplifier.

Description

PRS MT15 Amplifier Gen1: Mark Tremonti’s 15/7 watt tube head

The PRS MT 15 is Mark Tremonti’s first signature amplifier: a two-channel, 15 watt tube head with a half power switch that takes it down to 7 watts. This Gen1 head is a showroom/used model, priced at 450 EUR and in stock at our showroom in Hilversum, the Netherlands.

It is a compact head built for heavier playing, but it is not limited to one style. The sections below cover what it offers, how its two channels work and the full specifications.

Key features at a glance

  • Two channels: Lead and Clean
  • 15 watts, switchable to 7 watts
  • Two 5881 power tubes and six JJ EC83S preamp tubes
  • Series, tube-driven effects loop
  • Fixed bias, adjustable, with bias jacks accessible from the back panel
  • Three extension speaker jacks: two 8 ohm and one 16 ohm
  • Included 1-button footswitch for Channel Gain/Clean, plus an amp cover

Lead and clean channels

Lead channel

The Lead channel has Master Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble and Gain controls. Like the PRS Archon amplifier, the MT 15 has five gain stages before the Master. The result is full, lush distortion with a tight low end that keeps its note definition for rhythm and lead playing.

Clean channel

The Clean channel has Bass, Middle, Volume and Treble controls. It is bright and chimey, which suits chords and fingerstyle playing. The pull boost on the clean channel adds a little overdrive for old school crunch. A Presence control is shared by both channels.

15 watts or 7 watts

Despite its 15 watts, the MT 15 is described as sounding more like a 50 watt amp. The half power switch takes it to 7 watts, which is useful for recording, practising, writing or playing a small room.

Servicing and connections

The bias adjusters are accessible from the back panel for ease of servicing. The back panel also has a fused IEC power inlet, a series tube-driven effects loop and three extension speaker jacks. As this is a head, you need a speaker cabinet to play it.
